"My wings of freedom, my escape from the past, desire and strength fuel my ascension and illuminate my path, I leave behind the broken wheel that is time passed, I do not cling to what once was, it will not hold me back, for I have my freedom, my wings of freedom."
About the Work: In the latest work of Tuan's Existential Illumination Series, "Wings of Freedom," a sensuously angelic winged beauty is posed atop the broken wheel of time passed, posed to ascend to heaven. She is balanced between the terrestrial and the extraterrestrial; physically, metaphorically, philosophically, and symbolically with nothing to hold her back. The nuances of this breathtakingly beautiful masterpiece take on new depth and interest in Lucite at all angles of view, particularly when the concaved surfaces of the void at the posterior of the work come into view. As the viewer becomes engrossed in Tuan's use of "Existential Balance and Existential Illumination" and his passion for detail, a sense of weightlessness begins to manifest itself, causing the mind's eye to perceive that this lonely angel is floating towards heaven, unencumbered by gravity and unattached to the past. She has achieved true freedom by not clinging to what once was by spreading her "Wings of Freedom."
About the Process: The process used to create Acrylic or Lucite sculptures for Tuan's Existential Illumination Series is quite a radical departure from that used to cast bronze. The process and the utilization of the mold is very unforgiving, for unlike bronze casting, acrylic material cannot be added after casting. During the pre-molding phase, a clay or plaster original initially undergoes a series of precision scans by a CGI (computer generated imaging) expert. These will be used in the creation of a plaster or epoxy positive that contains all of the nuances that are to be in the final sculpture. Next a mold is cast of a flexible proprietary material under high pressure and is check and double checked to assure that there are no flaws. The acrylic or Lucite is then screened form imperfections in a clear room before UV agents are introduced and the material emulates the consistency of cold honey. This prepared material is carefully poured into the mold which is then pressurized to insure that even the smallest crevices are filled before the material is cured using a combination of heat and pressure. The completed sculpture has an opaque appearance before precision sanding and hand polishing gives the work a crystal-like clarity. As a final step, surfaces to be frosted are blasted with a mixture of glass and aluminum.
